In Bangladesh, it is also called as Mohan Shohid Dibosh. There is a history lies behind that day. After separated from India in 1947, Pakistan was created with two different geographic parts as East Pakistan (currently Bangladesh) & West Pakistan. Those two states was not only different for geographic location. Culture & language were also different. But in 1948, Pakistan Government declared Urdu as the national language for both two states. But the peoples of East Pakistan didn’t accept this rule. Because Bengali was the mother language of the majority number of people of East Pakistan. And finally students of Dhaka university started to protest with the support of general publics.

On 21 February 1952, police fired on protest rallies. Few students died instantly & hundred of people got injured. Salam, Barkat, Rafiq, Jabbar and Shafiur was one of them who died for that protest. And till today, it is one of the rare incidents that peoples sacrificed their lives for mother language. On 17 November 1999, UNESCO recognized the 21st February as International Mother Language Day. So, every year the 21 February celebrated globally with proper respect. Bangladesh celebrates this day more special. Because we are the pride nation who sacrificed our lives to speak Bangla.
